10 reasons to choose a Russian Blue
I feared animals all my life. Even the smallest kitten was a threat to me, since it got claws and fangs. I was able to walk around the blocks in my neighbourhood for hours, only to avoid passing by a dog. I was horrified every time a small dog came and licked my legs when I did not pay attention. My friends who had pets, had to keep them locked when I visited them. Most of all, the main reason I wanted to take my driving license for, was to get over all the dogs that scared me so much in all those evenings when I returned from down town, all alone in the dark (don’t worry, I never used the car to get over dogs in the streets, no matter how much I hated them).
There is a saying in astrology that in the second part of our lives we change, as the rising sun is taking control over our personality. Well, I’m quite skeptical about such stuff, but I have to admit that I radically changed after my early 30s. Beliefs, values, habits, even food preferences, are now so much different! The glory of all changes happened three weeks ago, when I got a little kitten. Funny, I woke up one morning some time ago and I realized that I needed a pet. Taking into consideration my lifestyle (I’m a late riser and I would never get out of bed before 10 o’clock without a good reason), I decided that no dog can wait for me to take it out for the first walk of the day at noon. After some research on internet, I opted for a cat and of all breeds available I liked most the Russian Blue. For those of you who are interested in details about this breed, there is some good info available at Cendre de Roses, a Russian Blue cattery’s website. Actually, this is the cattery I took my kitten from. Their cats and kittens are really gorgeous, well groomed, and very friendly and playful. I went there to take my kitten and I also took some pictures of her and her 15 brothers, sisters and cousins, all of them trying to reach the lid of my camera objective.
Coming back to the point, I’ll give you now my 10 reasons to choose a Russian Blue cat as your four-legged friend:
- Her short, gray hair does not fall in big quantities and it is not so easy noticeable on your clothes or on the carpets (assuming that you don’t have white carpets).
- She is extremely playful, but if she sees that you are busy, she waits quiet until you finish. The only condition is not to look at her at all, because if she surprises you looking at her, she starts begging for a nice run around the room.
- She does not make a lot of noise, so your neighbours would never complain.
- She is intelligent; with a little bit of patience and rewards, you can teach her to bring the toys back to you (my supreme goal is that one day she fetches the remote control of my TV set, but we still have a loooong way to go).
- She is very loving, she gets very attached to her master (she is following me everywhere, like a shadow).
- She can entertain herself for several hours (if some nice toys are provided), so you can leave her alone in the house without problems. Still, if you are away for many hours everyday, it would be better to get two cats, so they can keep each other company.
- The Russian Blue does not need a lot of grooming; brushing her coat once a week is enough. Besides, she adores brushing, so she would gladly accept it. My little kitten accepts also claws clipping and polishing.
- She does not attack children: this is what the breeders told me; as I don’t have any children, I cannot tell if it’s true or not (although, judging by the way she attacks the fluffy toys, I would think twice before letting a small child alone with her in the same room).
- She does not seek revenge; despite the fact that she has a good memory, she never tries to pay you back the “bad” things you do to her (such as leaving her alone in a room when you need to do something elsewhere, or not allowing her to eat the flowers or to inspect the garbage).
- As I’m writing this post, she has fallen asleep on my foot – she’s the best slipper I’ve ever tried.

I wrote this Russian Blue review from two reasons: first, I just adore my little Russian Blue cat, and second, I’m participating in the Problogger group writing project Reviews and predictions.

Thanks everybody for stopping by. I’m glad you like her. This will be my first Christmas without a Christmas tree, because I’m afraid she’s going to eat it and get sick. Maybe next year, when she’ll be older (and wiser, maybe)

[…] This post opens the “what you can do with a cat” series, which is going to run here, at AllTipsAndTricks, over the next few days. Since I’ve got myself a cute, little kitten, I started to look deeper into pet care and training. I did not succeed to train her on anything yet, but she trained me on toy throwing and hide-and-seek. I have owned a Russian Blue for almost one year. I had no interest in cats initially having grown up with dogs. My friend adopted the Russian Blue from her neighbors who did not treat her well. Unfortunately, the Russian Blue female, did not assimilate well with my friend’s two male cats, so she asked me to take the Russian Blue. I surprisingly fell in love with the good nature of the cat and she is super loyal, although she hisses at any cat that I try to introduce her to. She is about 4 years old, I wonder how long Russian Blue cats live and if I decided to try to foster before adopting a companion for her, should it be a male or female? I have never seen her with another Russian Blue. Would she get along better with another Russian or does anyone have any suggestions of breed. Also should it be a baby cat or a young adult? My Russian also loves to travel which is unusual for most cats. My Russian is also super neat in the litter box. Cheers!
Hi Jason,
You are so lucky that your cat likes to travel. Mine is definitely against it. The life expectancy of Russian Blues is about 16 years. About companionship, I don’t know. My little one grew up in a cattery, together with 30 other cats, but since I took her, she did not meet any other cat.
Cheers!
Wow, thanks for the good info.
I have just adopted Nicolai,a Russian Blue as well. Its been almost two weeks since I got him.He is very sweet like your cat, and also very shy. I was having a hard time understanding him as I am used to more active, attention-demanding cats, but I see now that Russian Blues are different.
Yes, he is very intelligent and has a great memory, and he is also very sweet and emotional. I have seen him crying a few times recently when he was sad. Its so cute. He is also very loyal and has made a point to stand/sit guard at the door during the night when I am asleep. He will also come to check on me to make sure I am ok. He even came to wake me up when I overslept on a work day.I dnt think I have never encountered such a sweet and thoughtful creature. He is the best flatmate ever.Definitely more caring than my boyfriend. hahaha

I had the most protective russian blue cat,
She Loved Being With Me 24/7. If i ever left her she would get upset, she protected me from everything it was so amazing for me to see how loving these beautiful cats are.
I also have two Russian Blues. Nice cats, indeed. Do you know I got them insurance?
